Our New PC Setup Process

When someone buys a new computer from us (or brings in a new computer they have bought elsewhere... we work on those too😉!), we offer two levels of service for the transfer.

Most people choose to have us perform our "New PC Setup". This process allows us to mimic your old computer as closely as possible. We have found that, by doing it this way, our clients can pick right back up where they left off using "muscle memory" with minimal learning curve.

To accomplish this, we sit down with the client and collect information about how they use their computer, what programs are important, and gather important passwords to login to all their familiar services. Then, the client leaves the old and new computer with us for 48 hours or less. This gives us time to transfer all the data to the exact same spot it lived on the old machine. Data can take a LONG time to transfer, especially if your old computer is aging, has a failing hard drive, or is just plain slow. This also allows us the time to download and install all programs that were used on the old computer, and generally replicate settings and preferences. Most of our clients LOVE the result of this and find it the easiest way to move between systems with minimal impact.

Most computer repair facilities do what is called a "data dump" instead. They drop all your old files onto the new machine and leave it at that. We do offer this service, "Data Transfer Only", which takes all your files from your entire old computer and dumps them into a folder on your new computer or on an external hard drive. However, none of your programs are installed, and the computer is not personalized to you at all, which includes your internet passwords and favorites, Microsoft Office, QuickBooks/Quicken, and more. Most clients see tremendous value in having us "move them in" to their new computer entirely.

No matter where you get your new computer, or how you want your data moved, Quietech is here to help! :-)

How to Prepare for your New PC SETUP

A QUICK RUNDOWN OF HOW THIS PROCESS WORKS:

  • You meet with us to provide all the details we need for the new computer. We need about 30 minutes of your time, but even after you leave, we MUST to be able to reach you by phone or text in case we hit any snags. If we cannot reach you, we will be unable to continue the New PC Setup process. This will significantly delay the delivery of your new computer, and will result in a surcharge for the added time spent.

  • Make sure you (always!) have a current backup of your old computer... the stress that a data transfer puts on an old hard drive can break it!

  • We will not be able to do any work for which you do not provide the credentials (i.e. we cannot sign you into your email if we don't have the password, and this process does not allow time for resetting passwords).

  • Give us 48-hours (assuming your old computer is functional, and it's hard drive is not in failure state, both of which can significantly delay the time it takes to complete the transfer/setup) to get your new computer all setup and running.

  • You will be called to come pick up your device when we are done and to meet with someone for a complimentary 15-minute tour of your computer.  This can be arranged at your new PC Setup appointment coming up! Rather have your new computer delivered, printers installed, etc.? We provide in-home/in-business service, and offer this service at a $30 discount for our New PC Setup clients.

  • Cancellations with less than 24-hours notice, and no shows, will result in a charge of $120.  Thank you for your understanding.  Please click here for our full terms of service.

WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING FOR YOUR APPOINTMENT:

  • During your appointment, we will be asking you about different accounts you may have: Email Addresses (Yahoo, Gmail, etc.), Microsoft accounts, Apple IDs, QuickBooks, etc. Please bring any and all usernames and passwords you have for all of your online accounts! If you don’t remember them, we can postpone your new computer setup, and instead help you reset them.  Then we can get back together and get your new computer ready!

  • If you have a printer and want to use it with your new computer, please write down your printer model number(s). We can load the printer driver(s) onto your new computer to help make setting them back up easier for you (or, we can come to your home/business and set the printer up for you at an additional cost).

  • We want to make sure the new computer you have is going to work with any external monitors you are going to use. Please note which kind of display your monitor(s) take! If you don’t know what they are called, take a picture and bring it to your appointment! Not sure what your monitor adapter is called? Scroll down for a handy visual guide!

  • Please bring your cell phone with you! If we need to reset any passwords, it may want to send you a text message to the number they have on file!

  • If you are bringing us any laptops or all-in-one computers for the data transfers, please bring their power cords!

  • Please bring us any disks/paperwork/logins/license keys for any software you will need reinstalled: Microsoft Office, Virus/Malware Protection, Quicken, QuickBooks, Adobe, Etc.

A FEW THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT GETTING A NEW COMPUTER:

  • You MUST be accessible by phone or text for the duration of the new PC setup process. If we cannot reach you, we will be unable to continue the New PC Setup process. This will significantly delay the delivery of your new computer, and will result in a surcharge for the added time spent.

  •  Files can be copied from the old computer to the new computer. Programs cannot, they must be installed by disk or download, which YOU would provide.

  • Even if you provide software on disk or download, sometimes your software might be too old to run on your new computer. We don’t what is compatible until we attempt to install your program. You may have to buy or subscribe to updated software.

  • Setting up your new computer can take some time. We will be calling you within 48-hours to schedule a time for you to come sit down with for a 15-minute complimentary walkthrough of your new system (assuming we have been provided with all your necessary/correct passwords, we are able to reach you when needed, your old computer is functional, and its hard drive is not in failure state, all of which can significantly delay the time it takes to complete the transfer/setup). Feel like you’ll need more training time? We offer training in our Tech Bar at our standard billing rate.

  • Your new computer will look and act differently than your old one. It is not possible to make it identical. Be prepared for a small adjustment period while you get used to your newer, better computer!

  • Your Recent files (like in Word, QuickBooks, Excel, QuickAccess, etc.) will be blank on your new computer until you open documents on it. The Recent files list is not something that can be transferred.

  • We have encountered several new computers that have a compatibility issue with T-Mobile Home Internet. This may require additional intervention to resolve.

  • Our labor charges are not refundable even if you return the computer. A $75 restocking fee applies to computers that are returned after they have had data transferred to them, to prepare them for a new user.

We hope you are as excited as we are! We can’t wait to get your new computer all setup for you! See you soon!

MONITOR CONNECTION GUIDE

If you use an external monitor (aka “screen”) for your computer, whether it’s a desktop or laptop, we need to ensure that we have the correct adapter (aka “plug”) to connect to your new computer. Use the handy attached chart to determine what plug type(s) your monitor has, and let us know when you come in to pick up your computer. This way, we can ensure we send you home with the correct cables! Without this info, we have NO way of knowing how to hook your screen up to your computer, so don’t forget to bring this info with you!
