Microsoft will terminate support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. This means Windows 10 computers will no longer receive critical security updates, which makes it unsafe to continue using.
Microsoft tends to support each operating system they release for around 10 years, then they put their focus towards their most recent operating system. Quietech feels sad that so many still viable computers will be e-wasted as a result of this decision, but we recognize that the newer operating systems are much safer for our clients, and we can't change what Microsoft is doing, so we just have to go along with it.
Manufacturers tend to smell blood in the water around events like this. As the date approaches, the prices will increase and you will likely pay more for the computer in the final months before Windows 10 ends, if past trends continue. There is always the potential that supplies may become limited, further driving up prices. We encourage you to make a plan NOW for replacement.
Yes, but its not safe. Think of an unsupported operating system kind of like sailing your ship into pirate waters unprotected. And the more time that passes, the more dangerous your Windows 10 computer will become after its end-of-life date. Unfortunately, due to the risk level that unsupported computers pose to our clients, Quietech is unable to work on Windows 10 computers after the "death date". Our number one commitment is keeping you safe.
Yes, assuming your computer was manufactured in 2018 or later (and meets the hardware requirements). To see if you can upgrade your Windows 10 computer, go here. Quietech can also help you determine if you can upgrade, and can perform the upgrade for you if you need assistance.
Microsoft has not yet released their end-of-life date for Windows 11. But if past trends continue, we will see continued support for Windows 11 through 2031. In addition, most new computers should be able to run whatever subsequent operating system Microsoft releases after Windows 11, therefore potentially extending the life of new computers.

Microsoft just released a new option for keeping your Windows 10 machine for one more year (with some caveats): Extended Security Updates (ESU).
These updates cover only critical and important security issues. They do not include new features or technical support. This means any existing glitches, driver issues, or software incompatibilities will remain unresolved. We view this as a band-aid for folks who are in a bind, not a solution.
We encountered an HP printer just yesterday that REQUIRED the latest non-security updates on Windows in order to continue working with the computer, so be aware that these types of issues can occur if you decide to extend support. Consumers can receive coverage through October 13, 2026. Microsoft has announced that they will NOT offer extended support, even paid, to consumers beyond this date.
There are two ways to enroll:
Free Option: Get one year of security updates at no cost by enabling Windows Backup, which syncs your settings and folders to OneDrive. If your files exceed OneDrive’s 5GB free storage limit (which nearly everyone will), you will need to purchase additional space. If you subscribe to Microsoft 365, this also entitles you to ESU coverage.
Paid Option: Pay $30 per device for one year of ESU coverage without using Windows Backup.
