Windows 10 has reached End of Life

What just happened

  • Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025.
  • No more security updates, bug fixes, or technical help will be provided.
  • Your computer will still run, but using it will become increasingly risky over time.

Why this matters

1. Security risks: New viruses and malware will no longer be patched, leaving your PC more vulnerable.

2. Software issues: Apps may stop updating or stop working on Windows 10.

3. Compliance concerns: Unsupported systems can violate rules in regulated environments (for example, Windows 10 is no longer HIPAA compliant).

What to do now

1. Check if your PC supports Windows 11: Go to Settings → System → About.

2. Back up your files: Save your documents and photos to an external drive or cloud storage.

3. Use strong antivirus software: It’s now essential for basic protection.

4. Pick your path:

  • Upgrade to Windows 11 if your device allows it.
  • Consider Extended Security Updates (ESU) to buy yourself a year (see below)
  • Replace your computer

5. Be extra cautious online: Avoid logging into sensitive accounts like email or banking on an unsupported system, and limit how much personal information you share. If your Windows 10 computer is not connected to the internet in any way, you are safe to continue using it!

What should I replace my outgoing Windows 10 computer with?

You NEVER have to buy directly from us, but we always appreciate your business!

Check out our large selection of new computers here.

If you would like help deciding what to buy, go here to book a FREE consult with our technicians.

We also offer really cool custom desktop computers. You can check those out here.

And if you just want to make a purchase on your own, we recommend these minimum specs for all new computers (as of 10-14-24):

  • i5/Ryzen 5 processor
  • 8gb RAM
  • Solid State Drive (size you choose should be a MINIMUM OF DOUBLE your current usage. So if you currently have used 300GB of your current drive, get a 1TB drive, NOT a 500GB drive. Here's how to check your usage.)

Reach out if we can help!

Hoping for another option besides replacement?

Microsoft just released a new option for keeping your Windows 10 machine for one more year (with some caveats): Extended Security Updates (ESU).

These updates cover only critical and important security issues. They do not include new features or technical support. This means any existing glitches, driver issues, or software incompatibilities will remain unresolved. We view this as a band-aid for folks who are in a bind, not a solution.

We encountered an HP printer just yesterday that REQUIRED the latest non-security updates on Windows in order to continue working with the computer, so be aware that these types of issues can occur if you decide to extend support. Consumers can receive coverage through October 13, 2026. Microsoft has announced that they will NOT offer extended support, even paid, to consumers beyond this date.

There are two ways to enroll:

Free Option: Get one year of security updates at no cost by enabling Windows Backup, which syncs your settings and folders to OneDrive. If your files exceed OneDrive’s 5GB free storage limit (which nearly everyone will), you will need to purchase additional space. If you subscribe to Microsoft 365, this also entitles you to ESU coverage.

Paid Option: Pay $30 per device for one year of ESU coverage without using Windows Backup.

Microsoft makes Windows 10 extended security updates free, but there’s a catch

Microsoft wants $30 to let you keep using Windows 10 securely for another year
