1. Security risks: New viruses and malware will no longer be patched, leaving your PC more vulnerable.
2. Software issues: Apps may stop updating or stop working on Windows 10.
3. Compliance concerns: Unsupported systems can violate rules in regulated environments (for example, Windows 10 is no longer HIPAA compliant).
1. Check if your PC supports Windows 11: Go to Settings → System → About.
2. Back up your files: Save your documents and photos to an external drive or cloud storage.
3. Use strong antivirus software: It’s now essential for basic protection.
4. Pick your path:
5. Be extra cautious online: Avoid logging into sensitive accounts like email or banking on an unsupported system, and limit how much personal information you share. If your Windows 10 computer is not connected to the internet in any way, you are safe to continue using it!

Microsoft just released a new option for keeping your Windows 10 machine for one more year (with some caveats): Extended Security Updates (ESU).
These updates cover only critical and important security issues. They do not include new features or technical support. This means any existing glitches, driver issues, or software incompatibilities will remain unresolved. We view this as a band-aid for folks who are in a bind, not a solution.
We encountered an HP printer just yesterday that REQUIRED the latest non-security updates on Windows in order to continue working with the computer, so be aware that these types of issues can occur if you decide to extend support. Consumers can receive coverage through October 13, 2026. Microsoft has announced that they will NOT offer extended support, even paid, to consumers beyond this date.
There are two ways to enroll:
Free Option: Get one year of security updates at no cost by enabling Windows Backup, which syncs your settings and folders to OneDrive. If your files exceed OneDrive’s 5GB free storage limit (which nearly everyone will), you will need to purchase additional space. If you subscribe to Microsoft 365, this also entitles you to ESU coverage.
Paid Option: Pay $30 per device for one year of ESU coverage without using Windows Backup.
